A CULTURE clash is on the cards in Swindon.

Broadgreen is home to all kinds of ethnic groups - many of which do not mix.

But now hopes are high that barriers between Muslim and Goan teenagers will be brought down - through football.

A match is planned for the weekend and the prospect of an on-the-pitch confrontation has prompted both sets of youngsters into training.

"I think the game will help break the ice," said 19-year-old Ansar Miah, one of the Muslim youngsters who has driven the idea forward.

"The Goans tend to keep themselves to themselves so this is a way of getting together.

"We are all excited and really looking forward to the match."

The age range of the boys is 17 to 23 and the football training sessions are already in progress.

The Bangladesh Association Youth and Community Centre, in Cricklade Road, Gorse Hill, has supplied the kit for the Muslim kids to wear on the day.

The boys heaped praise on Doug Imrie, a community sports coach working for Swindon Council, who has worked to bring the communities together.

Doug said: "These groups don't tend to mix, whether that be down to peer pressure or the area itself, so I hope this makes a difference."

Kick off is on Sunday at 1.45pm on the extended pitch at the County Ground.
