A SWINDON construction company has built one of the world's largest duty free shops at Heathrow's new Terminal 5.
Edmont, based in Upper Stratton, built the World Duty Free Shop in the new terminal, which opened for business yesterday.
A hundred people worked on the £5m project, which took a year to complete.
Joinery director Robert Nottage said: "The best thing was working on a project of this scale. I am extremely pleased that we managed to get the project done on time and within budget.
"It's a huge achievement and gives us a very good reputation for the future. I guess the biggest challenge was getting everything done within the time we were given but we did it and it's a great feeling. It's great to be able to stand back and know that we had a hand in creating something of this scale. It's the biggest retail unit in an airport in Europe."
Mr Nottage was invited to represent the company at the controversial airport terminal's official opening by the Queen on March 14.
He said: "I was invited to represent the company at the official opening ceremony and sat quite close to her Majesty.
"I was thrilled to be invited and it was a great day at the end of a brilliant job for Edmont.
"The terminal is actually quite an environmentally friendly building. It's very light and airy, the building is mainly glass so there's a lot of natural light and a lot of space and you don't feel so confined like you do in the other terminals.
"I think it's a major achievement for a British airport.
"With the other terminals, you do get claustrophobic and there's not enough natural light and that's definitely not the case for Terminal 5. I think it's going to be quite successful."
The Terminal 5 project is another feather in the cap of Edmont, which recently completed its part in the Eurostar project.
The company manufactured and installed the Eurostar check-in desks along with anti-blast fire doors between the main station and the Underground line.
They are currently working on the extension at Stansted airport.
The Terminal 5 project was managed from Swindon with a small site office at Heathrow.
Site foreman Terry Howell spent almost a year at Heathrow preparing the way before the site work officially started, and also stayed on following the main handover of the shop.
Terry said: "This was the largest job I've ever worked on.
"Edmont had to meet stringent health and safety, security and environmental standards and were one of the few UK companies with the systems in place and security vetted staff to undertake such a project."

Edmonts should be rightly proud of this achievement. They are a relatively small contractors competing with the multi nationals and have strong links to Arkells. Their painting and small works teams do a great job in keeping Arkells pubs some of the best, if not best in this part of the world. Credit it where it's due.

Well done Edmont. Good to see a local firm working to exacting standards. Pity BAA management have not been able to manage T5 project to the samestandard.

I think I heard somewhere that Edmont was owned by Arkell's.
But still a great achievement by a local company.
