FULL TIME: Tranmere 2 Swindon 1
 |
| Town boss Maurice Malpas |
A MISERABLE night in Birkenhead got even worse for the hardy travelling Town fans after seeing their side crash 2-1 at Tranmere.
Steve Jennings and Chris Greenacre took advantage of some sloppy defending to boost Tranmere's play-off hopes and leave Town with just one win in 10.
Billy Paynter pulled a deserved goal back for the visitors after the break as they dominated the second 45 minutes but could not find another way past the hosts defence.
The torrential rain made a quagmire-like Prenton Park treacherous for both sides but Town cannot blame the weather for some schoolboy-like defending.
Malpas made several changes to his starting line-up for the trip to Tranmere.
Lee Peacock, Jamie Vincent and Billy Paynter all return in place of Michael Timlin, Jack Smith and the injured Barry Corr. There is also a place on the bench for Kaid Mohamed along with Blair Sturrock, Timlin, Jack Smith and goalkeeper Phil Smith.
In monsoon-like conditions the game was understandably slow to get going with both sides struggling to find their feet on a treacherous Prenton Park surface.
The first chance of note came on five minutes when Jon-Paul McGovern's curling cross from the right just evaded the lunging Craig Easton.
Town found themselves behind on 10 minutes though when a catalogue of errors from the visitors allowed Steve Jennings to poke home the opener.
First Lee Peacock missed his challenge on Jennison Myrie-Williams in the middle, he found Shane Sheriff and his switched pass to the right caught out Easton.
Jennings closed in on goal and somehow poked the ball past Peter Brezovan at his near post, perhaps the Slovak should have done better.
Brezovan quickly made amends two minutes later when he kept out Sheriff's close-range volley, after the defender was given the freedom of Prenton Park in the penalty area.
Malpas' men hit back though and, after good approach play down the right by Peacock and Billy Paynter, Anthony McNamee saw his delicious chip headed off the line by Ben Chorley on the quarter of an hour mark.
Simon Cox was the next to go close for the visitors, sending a low 20-yard strike straight at goalkeeper Danny Coyne on 22 minutes.
With the rain showing no signs of stopping, mistakes were being made by both sides and Brezovan almost fumbled Myrie-Williams' tame shot on 33 minutes but was alert enough to grab the ball at the second attempt.
Town were given a mountain to climb on 39 minutes when Chris Greenacre doubling Tranmere's lead.
A set-play again proved the visitors downfall, as has too often been the case recently, with the striker volleying home at the far post after Paul McLaren's corner had been flicked on by Peacock.
Peacock was adamant he had been shoved in the back but referee Mr Lewis allowed the goal to stand.
Town started the second half well and were unfortunate not to have got themselves back in the game after a torrent of early pressure.
Peacock saw a header scrambled off the line from McGovern's corner on 47 minutes and just a minute later Hasney Aljofree saw his far post looping header again cleared off the line, this time from Robbie Stockdale.
Craig Easton then dragged a shot agonisingly wide of the right hand post on 54 minutes as Town continued to look for a way back into the game.
To Town's credit they continued to dominate the action and again almost scored on 63 minutes, Peacock this time shooting at Coyne after nice interplay between Easton and Miguel Comminges.
The deserved breakthrough finally came on 67 minutes. McGovern's clever ball down the right channel set Cox away and he worked his way towards Tranmere's bye-line.
After beating his man with ease he rifled the ball across the area and Billy Paynter simply tapped home from inches out.
Malpas then replaced McGovern with Kaid Mohamed, recalled from a loan spell at Torquay yesterday, as Town strove to capitalise on their increasing dominance.
Peter Brezovan saved well from Ian Moore at the other end on 78 minutes after the striker had burst clear of Town's defence.
With five minutes left, Cox saw a speculative volley fly just wide before heading McNamee's right wing cross wide with just seconds remaining.
LINE-UPS

toddy McGovern is a midfield playmaker (apparantly ) and Moses is a striker (apparantly )
This is what our leader would have us believe , frankly I wouldn't have either in the team.

Why did he bring Kaid on for McGovern? Since when has he been a midfielder? The manager has not got a clue. The Motherwell fans feel bloody sorry for us even the ones that like him!!

On another note, we should beat Port Vale, and then we need one more win to stay up, which should come from either Gillingham away or Millwall at home.

i need a drink, cant take anymore, whats going on, we had a half decent team and a crack at the play-offs now all we have is a relegation dogfight and a team of de-motivated confused mis-fits.....come on AF you made a mistake with Malparse put it right before the situation is beyond rescue.

We don't know what happens in training, and we also don't know what happens during the pre-match and half-time team talks.
It could be the players just being low on morale for all we know.

There is no point showing him the door with 6 games to go the last thing the dressing room needs is more chaos .

There was a scot from motherwell
who obviously doesn't travelwell
But over the border he was sent
Our promotion challenge to dent.
But in this awful rhyme
His punnishment had to be Fitton the crime
And now wer'e all going through bloody hell.

So, 40 games played and getting closer to the relegation battle. When MM came in, all the talk was of how winning our games in hand would put us in the top 6. He has a team that are geting paid and he has been able to manage without a transfer embargo.
The team that could win regularly under Sturrock can't win under Malpas. It's inexcusable.
Enough is enough. AF, this man has to go. Now.

obviously missed the bus.
perhaps if we al went to bed we'd wake up in the morning and we'd be top of the league .
Thank god it was only a nightmare we were getting relegated, reality is we're champions because Malpas is positive!

Ok, bad run of results at the moment which don't get me wrong I hate as much as the next man. Why does everyone think MM has cost us a play off place when the only time we've been in a play place was at the start of October and we've basically been mid table all season? Given that we only got promoted last season I would have been happy with mid table, let alone with all the cr*p that's gone on and the change in management?

loads of people casting judment and not a single comment from a person who witnessed the match.
cwe were always going to lose tonight, but made a decent fight of it,it seems.
all those slating mcgovern should remember who created most of our goals and scoring chances prior to malpas getting the job.
and timlin isn't fully match fit as it showed on monday.
lets keep it real people as some of the comments are pathetic.
all that said, i have little faith in malpas to get us going in the right direction.

Ok, bad run of results at the moment which don't get me wrong I hate as much as the next man. Why does everyone think MM has cost us a play off place when the only time we've been in a play place was at the start of October and we've basically been mid table all season? Given that we only got promoted last season I would have been happy with mid table, let alone with all the cr*p that's gone on and the change in management?[/quote] We dont think he has cost us a playoff place, the worry is if this was next season 1 win 10 we would be rock bottom, dont say he will bring his own players in please.because he will have a job he has no contacts.Timlin was here before so thats not his player.McNamee is byrne's recomendation and so was kanyuka.like i said before we would be bottom if this was next season.MALPAS OUT

Wake up Frazg: we are not mid table any more
We are in the bottom third of the table and sinking faster than a roll on roll off ferry with the doors open
Byrne and Williams to be given charge of the team for the rest of the season and a complete new management team in the summer
Thank you MM for what you have tried to do, but you just ain't doing it mate
Motherwell = allisnotwell
Cheerio

YETI: Of course those fans who travelled to Tranmere haven`t posted on here. Can anyone seriously expect them to post on here before tumbling into bed in the early hours of this morning ? Hope Tranmere soon recover from their roasting !

Could those slagging the team off, and who didn't go last night, let us know where you get your ideas on how last nights game (not the one v Southend or Brighton, last night's)went. If it's from Brunel FM, heaven help us.

Andy Cryer - what is wrong with the grammar in this sentence?
A MISERABLE night in Birkenhead got even worse for the hardy travelling Town fans after seeing their side crash 2-1 at Tranmere.
