Speed camera is set on fire

A SPEED camera was torched in Chiseldon and residents says a disgruntled motorist could be to blame.

The burned out remains on the A346, pictured right, in Marlborough Road, opposite Chiseldon Primary School, has shocked residents.

The incident occurred during the early hours of Wednesday.

Resident Jenny White, 62, said: "I wonder if the camera had caught a driver and he or she was taking revenge?

"I didn't see anything and I don't think this has ever happened before - certainly not in the six years I've been living here."

An 80-year-old woman, who did not want to be identified, said: "I've lived in the village since 1955 and never heard of any vandalism as severe as this."

A 65-year-old neighbour added: "I think the camera has been making a difference.

"Sometimes you hear people applying their brakes as they spot the camera but this person has obviously taken matters in their own hands."

The speed camera was removed yesterday for further examination.

"The camera is well established and has been in place for the last 10 years without a problem," said Sgt Nick Blencowe of the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership.

"A tyre was set alight and thrown over the camera.

"Although this person might not support the idea of a camera it doesn't give them the right to commit criminal damage.

"We haven't had a problem with damage to cameras in the Swindon and Wiltshire for seven years.

"But since then we think there might have been copycat incidents in the county after damage in the Avon and Somerset areas."

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Wiltshire Police on 0845 408 7000.

Alternatively, call anonymously Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

So the police think it might be a copycat incident then promptly explain exactly how they did it. Nice one!

If you do the crime then take the punishment don't then go out and do another crime. No excuses for criminal damage lets hope they catch the person!

Maybe they'll replace it with a tax collection booth. More honest than a 'safety' camera.

While it's very rarely right condone criminal damage, when the damage done is to something even more criminal - what's the lesser of the two evils?

I know how the police feel, I would feel pretty miffed if my local ATM was torched when I needed some money! afer all the other cameras/ATMs in Swindon are "out of service"

Well, considering that the speed camera is legally there, I think it's quite obvious.

If you don't like something, you get it changed properly - i.e. within the legal boundaries.

I think the current government is criminal, but fortunately, I have enough common sense to realise going Fawkes on them is counter-productive - as is this rather stupid incident.

Burnt speed-cam. Marvellous! They are stupid devices introduced my evil capitalist baskets.

Bring back Police cars (not M/way - local town pandas) to police our roads from the idiots on motorbikes (I'm gonna step out in front of the next one doing 80 up/down the roads and have pleasure in seeing them spin off into a tree) and also patrol and protect our streets, at random, so to develop some fear of detection in the thieving twits in town.

I like the way they say:

"A tyre was set alight and thrown over the camera.

If they really set light to the tyre first, then sign them up for a circus somewhere.

Not sure if you have seen them live but I went to Reading on wednesday night to see them and they are the best band or act I have ever seen live.

Before slating them get yourself a ticket and go and watch one of the best shows you will ever see!!

If All motorcyclists are as bad as you seem to think, what makes you so sure that they'd bother to swerve into a tree?
I suppose no car drivers ever do 80mph?
As the testing for a motorcycle license is somewhat more involved than getting a car license, and most motorcyclists also drive cars, it is more than a bit ignorant to make such a sweeping, general statement.
I will be riding my own motorcycle from Land's End to John O'Groats this year, on the back roads, in order to take in the scenery, at a leisurely pace.
No doubt various parts of the journey will have our pleasure marred by idiots driving cars, pulling out in front of us (they'll have to stop, anyway we'll pretend we haven't seen them), but I don't brand every car driver as an idiot
