'Accident was waiting to happen'

| Flowers deck the scene of the accident |
THE tragic death of Tyrese Hannah was an accident waiting to happen, according to people living near the scene.
The 40 elderly people who live in Cirencester Court in Drove Road say they witness accidents on a weekly basis.
They have been campaigning for improvements to safety in the road for the last two years.
And they say seven-year-old Tyrese's death has confirmed their worst fears.
The youngster from Walcot was knocked unconscious when a car lost control and hit him in Drove Road two weeks ago today. He died later at the Great Western Hospital.
The Cirencester Court Committee have lobbied Swindon Council to incorporate traffic calming measures into the street.
The speed limit was reduced from 40mph to 30mph six years ago. The road has been hatch-marked to emphasise the bend to drivers and to make it appear narrower.
And now two illuminated flashing 30mph signs are to be installed in the road next month.
David Peaple, 69, a resident and secretary of the committee, said: "It is the sad reality that someone has died before something is done to improve safety but the dangers were there.
"In meetings with them the committee has been advised it was not seen as a priority as there have been few reported incidents and no fatalities and resources are finite.
"But there have been at least two incidents that I can remember where cars have overturned just outside our building.
"One damaged our boundary wall and had there been pedestrians on the path they wouldn't have stood a chance.
"I see the council are laying a non-skid surface but I still don't think the flashing signs go far enough."
Residents' spoke with deputy council leader Fionuala Foley about the dangers of Drove Road at a meeting in August.
In the meeting's minutes it was recorded that fatalities would have to happen before action was taken.
"I believe we should have an island to make traffic coming down the hill slow down and go round it and do away with the slip lane from Belle Vue Road," said David.
"We will continue to campaign for this road to be made safer for drivers and pedestrians in an attempt to prevent another tragedy."
Resident Margaret Byrne said: "It is so sad that this dear little boy has died. Maybe if more people had listened to us it may not have happened."
The committee are also pushing for a pedestrian crossing, signs indicating elderly people are crossing and signs to show that Chandler Close is a no through road.
They have written to Swindon Mayor Michael Barnes to alert him to their concerns.
And they have called on South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove for her support.
Mrs Snelgrove said: "I've had meetings and extensive correspondence with the council over this road. I have to walk that way to get to my office and I frequently see motorists driving too fast. Some are even driving while talking on their mobile phone.
"Traffic control experts need to work on this as a matter of urgency."

Until access to Belle Vue Road from Victoria Hill is stopped - which it won't be - the part of Drove Road where the accident occured will [italic]always[/italic] be a blackspot.
Cars filtering on to a main highway whilst virtually having to look behind them to the right will never see what's happening to their immediate left (ie, on Drove Road), it's physically impossible.
That the Belle Vue and Hunt Street roads filter in to a notoriously dangerous corner is totally unacceptable.
Residents of Belle Vue Road have been demanding that the Council remove access to Belle Vue Road from Victoria Road for well over 14 years now... the only official response is that there is 'no problem'.
The reality would suggest otherwise.

The slip road access from Belle Vue Road should be closed.
Overall though you can't blame the road for persistent bad driving. Coming down Cricklade Street is like a launching ramp and many drivers take the bend well above the 30mph limit. This section of road though has always been 30mph and I thought Drove road was reduced to 30mph because of all those damm crossings.

I know Belle Vue Rd is a pain, but merging onto Drove Rd is not that dissimilar from driving onto a motorway or even Windsor Road onto Queens Drive.
Personally I'm surprised they haven't put up a roundabout, that seems to be the standard answer for tricky junctions.

why was it necessary to remove my comment adver? There is no such thing as a dangerous road only dangerous drivers that use them!
We do not know the circumstances of the driver involved in this accident no amount of speed humps bumps and precautions would sto someone who for example is intoxicated.
Isn't the adver great at telling one side of the story only.

Apart from two major differences: when you join a motorway there aren't cars coming directly at you from the opposite direction.
When you join a motorway, you do not join it on a dangerous bend.
Belle Vue Road should be made access only. The sheer weight of traffic that uses it as a rat run (it's a residential area don't forget) is what makes it dangerous. Combine that with it being an almost blind feed onto a dangerous corner of a main road and the only surprise is that there aren't more accidents.

The Adver tend to remove comments that speculate. It's a legal thing I think
It's such a shame this had to happen but I've driven down that turning many a time and as suggested above its no different to merging on a motorway except you're going 40mph slower

It is a real great shame that a young life was taken at that spot, I have personally monitored DROVE ROAD spot and a number of MAD,MAD motorists are driving in the excess speed down that road. I live nearby and am very concerned now as soon there might be another life taken. The slip road from Belle Vue does cause motorists to beat the oncoming traffic, and as we all know that there is quite a number of pubs nearby. Sooner than later something dreadful is going to happen unless drastic action is taken by the Police and Burough. I am for reducing the speed limit, yet it is not a blind spot from High Street, but side streets are the culprit and young motorists are trying to be "Lewis Hamilton" on the roads these days with NO CARE of pedestrians or children anywhere in Swindon, especially Queens Drive where I noticed the souped up cars are speeding over 80, jumping the red lights, But Drove Road is a commuter route and is getting busier all the time. Something MUST be done to protect the pedestrians as it sounds that a lot of bangers on the road are MOT failures and uninsured. Do something now so there will not be another young life taken.

BIg Mac I'd hardly call it a dangerous bend. Obviously it is a shame that this young life was taken but it could've happened on any road

Having the flashing 30mph signs would seem a sensible option. Closing the road will simply increase problems elsewhere. I drive up and down the road 4 times a day, have never had a problem. As for the arguement that traffic is getting worse and therefore making the problem worse, I would disagree and say that the road is probably safer at 8:30am and 5:30pm when the traffic is heavy than it is at 11pm when the roads are empty and vehicles can travel at higher speeds. It is a lot easier (and often quicker) to join drove road from the adjoining roads when there is traffic than it is when there is no traffic or light traffic (that's not to say it won't take you longer to move from Belle Vue to Christchurch once you have joined the traffic.
All of this aside, until the authorities know if there was any blame on the part of the driver (or other drivers), I think it would be wise to leave any major changes (road closures) unitl a fully educated solution can be decided upon.

if people drive with due care and attention then the road and the links to it are fine.i use it almost daily.
the blame for any accident is due to idiotic driving.too many drivers are on our roads that shouldn't be.until unfit drivers are removed from our roads you can put any type of calming you like. deaths and accidents will still occur.
campaign for tougher laws of the road if you want action on road safety.

I agree with Oldtown 2007 but with a few additions, regular testing of qualified drivers both new and old, agree or disagree with this as you will but this will take the poorer drivers off the roads.
Ask yourselves when was the last time you picked up a copy of the Highway Code?
Is your journey that much of a hurry that you have to speed - surely if you call ahead and explain you are to be late the person you are meeting will understand? Alternatively plan your journey better in future - I am aware that there can be congestion and accident issues that will affect this!
Younger or new drivers should be licensed to drive up to a maximum engine cc to be reveiwed through regular assessments to a certain age.
Again to echo many comments it is down to driver handling and NOT road layout in the majority of accidents. Blaming the road and in turn the Highway Agency is not the way forward. Do you want the road reduced to 20 mph with inceased carbon emmisions along Drove Road - I am sure I wouldn't, a good flow of traffic with sensible drivers at the wheel would be preferable.
A snipet of info from The AA "In 2000, the then Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions argued against reducing the 30 mph limit for fear of increasing emissions."
Tests by The AA emissions show this equates to an increase of more than 10% when reducing speeds from 30mph to 20mph.

It's utter rubbish to blame the junction. The problem is people driving too fast from the bend by the church. It's a wide road and the bend is a lot sharper than it looks. I'm sure some people seem to think that it's still 40mph, or perhaps they just don't care. The simple fact is that many drivers are arrogant and therefore careless, and as in this case it costs lives.

It is if the Council actually do something to make that bend safer and remove the ability for cars to access Drove Road from Belle Vue Road.
How anyone might even start to argue that it wouldn't make the road safer is beyond me - and complete nonsense.

So printing stories on ban the speeders! close this dangerous road! is not specualting? Or stirring up the emotions of the we hate cars pc brigade?
My point stands the adver likes to print one sided stories and stir up emotional adjectives from those who listen to it!
I will say it again, road closures, speed humps and bumps will not stop drivers who choose to drive unlicensed, speed, drive intoxicated or indeed in any other dangerous manor.
Why don't you print an article on that?

Council is council at the end of the day. It doesn't matter where you are in the chain, responsibility for the council's failings ultimately lie with top brass.
When those Child Benefit data discs were lost, it wasn't the direct result of anything the HMRC chairman did, but he as management incumbent, he was responsible for HMRC and so had to carry the can.

The sad fact is that our council will only act on road safety after a death or serious accident occurs. The people of Swindon deserve better.
Last year Swindon Borough Council carried out a traffic consultation for Old Town - NOTHING has happened since.
During the consultation, Old Town Councilors commented that traffic calming measures - such as speed humps, pedestrian crossings, build outs and flashing speed signs - would cost too much to implement. One went further to say they would look 'messy'.
Do we have to wait for another tragic accident for the proper traffic calming measures that we all deserve?

During the consultation, Old Town Councilors commented that traffic calming measures - such as speed humps, pedestrian crossings, build outs and flashing speed signs - would cost too much to implement. One went further to say they would look 'messy'.
Do we have to wait for another tragic accident for the proper traffic calming measures that we all deserve?

my heart goes out to Tyresse's mum it is an absolute tragedy and a compltely avoidable accident. It seems to be the norm that the authorities will not prevent accidents instead they wait for them to happen and act afterwards. it is the same at oliver tomkins infants and junior school the sheer volume of traffic going past the school and those parents and the Big A that come on to school site with their vehicles are going to get a child injured or worse killed. at least swindon as a whole can learn from what happened to tyresse. Prevention is better than cure

maybe if people drove sensibly we wouldn't need preventative measures. I use this road daily and have never ever had a problem with it. Why should the road be changed just because of a few idiots ? Total waste of money.

My previous post went something along the lines of 'whatever prevention is put along Drove Road (or any other road) there will always be an imbecile that takes that chance that could prove fatal'. Tonight I met that imbecile who had the cheek to overtake me in his boy racer blue lancer at the give way point at the top of the hill, flooring it right past the point where the flowers lie on the road narrowly missing a car he should have given way to, let alone the fact i was in front of him at the give way line. I hope you're reading this because you're a joke!!!! and if God was smiling on me, your car would have broken down just by the Beefeater and i would have explained to you, forcefully, what impact tw*ts like you have on the road!

Today 3/4/08 Tyrese Hannah will be laid to rest. Let us remember him always. Lets all do our part and make a conscious effort to drive a little slower and a whole lot better!
