'Do it for the gaffer' urges Paynter
Town's Billy Paynter
Town's Billy Paynter

A FRUSTRATED Billy Paynter admits it feels like they are letting boss Maurice Malpas down after Town's luckless League One run continued at a wet Prenton Park last night.

The Robins dominated their play-off chasing hosts for long spells but two first-half Tranmere goals were enough to consign Town to their fourth defeat in five games.

Paynter grabbed a second-half consolation in a spirited team display but the striker knows it is all about results as the 2-1 reverse leaves the threat of relegation lurking.

A run of just one win in 10 games has left Malpas answering growing critics, but Paynter insists the Scot does not deserve the abuse he has been getting.

He said: "We are doing things right and we are a team. Everyone is in this together, it is not individuals. We are in this together.

"We do need to win for the gaffer because this run of results is not fair on him.

"He has come in and brought some good ideas in. He wants us to play football but we just need that bit of luck all over the pitch.

"I don't think he can take the blame when we have been playing well but not winning.

"Even their second goal, did it cross the line? You need some luck. It is hard to take but we keep saying that. We have played well and got beat again."

Town are still a comfortable nine points away from the drop zone but, all eyes will be on today's games, as the threat remains very much there.

Paynter though has urged everyone to banish any relegation fears - insisting it is up to them to make sure they do not materialise.

He said: "I don't think we should look behind us and worry about what is going on.

"We need to concentrate on ourselves and if we start winning games then relegation will not be a concern.

"We have to get things right to get out of this problem.

"If we get an early goal and get that belief I think that is what we need. Hopefully that is sooner."

1 win in 10 games is not down to lack of luck. So far the defeats have been only by the odd goal which is something.

Do it for the gaffer.. Your giving birth to a monkey! The reason we're so **** is down to the gaffer. Sack him and be done with it

If you are doing things right Billy boy I dread to think what will happen when the team start doing things wrong

Perhaps the euphoria of scoring a goal has gone to your head

The early goal at Orient did not seem to do the trick did it or was that all bad luck too

So what are the good ideas then, destroy Jerel and Brez' confidence, play a right winger at left back, and not bother with a proper right sided midfielder

Good plan

early belief you say? 1-0 up at Orient, Brighton and numerous others AND we get beat!

I admire your loyalty to your boss Billy but the truth is from the stands we havn't been playing well.
We've been rubbish since after the New Years day game against Swansea.
If we played like that every game then we'd be in the top six.
We're rubbish and we're down, we need six points and I can't see them, teams at the bottom need to beat us to try to stay up. I reckon they have more bo##ocks than we do.

My kids want to know... whats a win?

Pathetic....

Please...lets have no more rubbish from the players about how they've learnt their lesson!

Will do wonders for season ticket sales...

This all sounds awfully familiar to us Motherwell fans I'm afraid. "We've had a lot of bad luck", "I don't know what to say", etc... heard it all before. Malpas was a world class player, and even seemed to be a useful No.2 (to Terry Butcher), but he just doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a manager.

Mr Fitton needs to think about where his loyalty lies. Is it with a manager who even if he was half decent will eventually move on, or is it with several thousand fans who basically keep the club running. Without us, Mr Fittons money wouldn't last long. I'm sure his intentions were good when he appointed Malpas as manager, but its time he held up his arms and admit he made an error of judgement. I also hope he has learned an expensive lesson here. A poor manager will fail even with a decent squad of players, where a decent (more expensive) manager can bring the best out of any squad. Think what a decent manager could bring out of the decent squad that we do have here already.

Well said Paynter, it's about time the players took some of the stick that MM has faced.

Cox in particular should have won us an extra 4 points or so. But he's the blue eyed boy we must not criticise him.

Good luck for saturday, I fancy a win for town to hopefully shut the doom monger sup for a while.

MM will turn it around!

I wish I had your confidence in him - Good luck and I hope you are right, as I think we are lumbered with him to at least the end of the season.
So if he manages to keep us up - is that going to be considered a success then and warrant more of the same next season...I dread to think what players he will bring in.

Billy, don't apologise or make excuses for the MUPPET, he is not up to it and does not belong in the job. You and 90% of the team were player as a team some 3 months or so ago but now you seem that you want out...

Let's be honest, Terry butcher hasn't exactly set the managerial world alight has he. His management skills must be on par with MM.
