Traffic police fine driver for stopping on motorway hard shoulder

Roads Policing Unit officers spent a busy Sunday making sure motorists were obeying highway rules while travelling along the 70mph carriageway.

At 4am on August 27, they took two people into custody for drink driving - one who had been returning from a festival and another who had been involved in a crash.

Just before 10am, they spotted one motorist stopping on the hard shoulder while in front of their marked police car.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said the driver had stopped to "check a postcode" and received a traffic offence report and a fine for placing himself and his family in avoidable danger.

At around 1.30pm, officers caught a doctor going at 95mph and increasing his speed to 105mph after passing their marked car, without noticing the police's presence.

A spokesman commented: "With observation like that, we are glad we are not sick. Driver reported to court."

At around 3pm, police wondered why the Volkswagen in front of them kept weaving between lanes on the motorway.

They later found that it was due to the driver texting with his phone in his hand while behind the wheel.

The motorist has been fined £200 and reported to court.
